Questions to ask prepping for an anti-racism training debrief

March 6, 2021 Posted by Nexus Uncategorized

So…your organization has just facilitated an anti-racism training or workshop for board, staff, volunteers, etc, and you want to connect the dots to next steps.

You’ve scheduled a debrief of the training to help with that, and you’re getting ready to plan it. And you want to make sure it’s successful.

If you’re like me, shifting from guessing what that might mean to simply asking would be a critical step in planning for a debrief’s success. And so I share the following questions to be shared with attendees before hand, to help with that.

  • What do you want and/or need out of a debrief?
  • What does the organization need out of a debrief?
  • What kind of support do you want and need to be able to participate as fully as possible?
  • What is a barrier you’ve experienced to being able to participate fully, particularly regarding conversations about racism and white supremacy?
  • Is there anything else you’d like to share, to be considered in planning and facilitating this debrief?

While any given debrief can’t be everything to everyone, hopefully this gives you a framework for it to be something to most people. In fact, I have shared that very sentiment at the top of debriefs themselves, to remind people of the input they provided and to help set expectations.

Hope you find this as useful for your planning as I do. Would love to hear what you think in the comments.
